Business Lessons We Can Learn From Muhammad Ali

Muhammad Ali.These are some of his best quotes

Over the weekend, news of the death of boxing legend Muhammad Ali filled social media with millions expressing their grief at the passing of the 74 year old. Ali passed away due to respiratory issues after a 32-year battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Muhammad Ali, who rightly proclaimed himself as the greatest, is best remembered for his mesmerizing ability to fight, not only with his fists but with his words as well. While we fondly remember and celebrate his fights in the boxing ring we also acknowledge that over the years Muhammad Ali spoke and wrote words of wisdom and encouragement.

At Yululate, we are taking a cue from him and trying to encourage and motivate you in your quest to have a successful business. Business just like sports (in this case boxing), involves a lot of hard work, wins, losses, competition and training. It can be overwhelming and once in a while you need some motivation. Here are some of the best quotes from Muhammad Ali we think can motivate you in your journey.

  1. I am the greatest, I said that even before I knew I was.

This is perhaps the most memorable quote from Muhammad Ali. It speaks to you as a business owner to always believe in yourself and your business and you will achieve success. Most times other people will not believe in your abilities or your venture but if you believe in it, they will eventually believe in it too.

  1. If my mind can conceive it, and my heart can believe it, then I can achieve it.

Muhammad Ali used this quote in his 2004 book when talking about preparation. As a business owner one of the most important things for you is to be well prepared. The first step is to visualize what you want for your business and believe you can achieve it. You can then start working towards it. As long as you believe in it, you will be able to make it work.

  1. The will must be stronger than the skill.

Muhammad Ali believed that preserving is a strong determinant in achieving victory. The same applies for your journey in having a successful business. Skill will only take you so far, if you do not have the will to succeed, you might as well quit. Your will to succeed must match and surpass your skills.

  1. He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life.

Most business owner fear taking the plunge for fear of losses. But what if you don’t take the risk, then your win will be small because your courage too was small.  Muhammad Ali reminds us that without taking risks, you remain where you are with what you have, which might not be much. By taking risks, there is a good chance you will be successful. And if it doesn’t pan out, you get out of it with a lesson, which is just as good.

  1. A man who has no imagination has no wings.

This should encourage you to think outside the box when coming up with business ideas. Not only will you have one up against your competitors, you will discover many of them can be profitable ideas. As Muhammad Ali put it, you will fly.

  1. Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing

No explanation needed right?

  1. Only a man who knows what it is like to be defeated can reach down to the bottom of his soul and come up with the extra ounce of power it takes to win when the match is even.

It is a fact that a business, whether a restaurant, garage or even a salon will face challenges and you as a business owner may fail occasionally. This quote from Muhammad Ali shows that after every challenge, you can come out stronger. With every failure there is a lesson or two learnt.

There are many more pearls of wisdom from Muhammad Ali we believe can motivate business owners but we couldn’t pick them all.
