World Vegan Day- Why Nairobians Should Embrace Veganism

It’s World Vegan Day and all around the world, vegans are celebrating the benefits of veganism for human health, animals and the environment. Today on Yululate we want to explore this way of living or eating ;). We are telling you all the benefits of being vegan and why you should embrace it. We are also listing some eating joints, (restaurants and hotels) in Nairobi that will cater to your vegan needs, should you choose to embrace it.

Before we get into it though,

Veg·an-ˈvēɡən/- noun- a person who does not eat or use animal products.

Veganism is sometimes confused with vegetarianism. Like vegans, vegetarians do not eat any animal flesh; no chicken, pig, cow, sea animals. In addition to not consuming any animal meat, a vegan doesn’t eat eggs, dairy products or any other product derived from an animal. Vegetarians, on the other hand, tend to eat eggs and dairy products like milk and butter.

Now that that is out of the way, let’s get to it. Obviously a vegan diet can be hard to get into. Especially if you, like many Nairobians love your nyama choma.  But more and more people are switching to veganism and not just because they want to save the animals. Research shows that the health benefits of veganism and vegetarianism are tremendous.

Nutritious Benefits of Vegan Diet

Dairy products and meats contain a large amount of saturated fats and by reducing the amount of saturated fats from your diet, you’ll improve your health, especially when it comes to cardiovascular health. Vegan diets have a lot of fibers which help with healthier bowel movements. High fiber diets also help fight against colon cancer. The diet has a lot of Vitamin C which  boosts your immune system, Magnesium which aids in the absorption of calcium and of course proteins from  beans, nuts, peas, lentils, and soy products.

Disease Prevention

Like stated above, vegan diets have a lot of nutritious elements that keep diseases at bay. Eating nuts and whole grains, while eliminating dairy products and meat, which a vegan diet does, will improve your cardiovascular health. A diet rich in whole grain also reduces high blood pressure.

Physical Benefits

Eating vegan meals eliminates most of the unhealthy foods that tend to cause weight issues. You are guaranteed to lose some weight with a vegan diet. The nuts and vitamins A and E from vegetables play a big role in healthy skin, so vegans will usually have good skin health.
